Reflection of Asperger's Syndrome and how to help people who have it (Miguel Carazo)

When meeting a person with Asperger’s syndrome, we can clearly see two things, the first one, he can be as smart as you, and the second one, he is bad at socializing. Doctors say that Asperger’s syndrome is part of the autism spectrum disorder, so they share some symptoms.

If we focus in children who have it, we may see some important facts, the don’t make visual contact, and sometimes he doesn’t know how to answer when someone talks to him. Also they show few emotions, because for them is a really tough situation to distinguish their emotions, for example when they are told a joke, they may not laugh. And when talking, they tend to repeat a lot, especially on topics which they are interested in.

So now, what can we do in class to help this kind of children?

First of all, keep calm, they are ordinary people, they are as smart as others, and as kind as the others. But we need to pay attention to many things: we have to teach them communicating skills, so that they will have less problems in order to talk with others. Also we have to teach them how to tune their voice, so that his speech won’t be flat. And also something very important is to make them learn to distinguish their emotions and to help them to express them.

In class we can use grouped sessions, so we don’t need to separate them from the others. ICT are a good resource in this kind of illness, we can find a lot of apps on the internet, which can help them to know how to express their emotions and feelings by showing them pictures that represent the different emotions.

I don’t want to be a teacher who leaves a student like this alone, and who doesn’t pay attention to his problems. I want to have solutions, real solutions, which imply working with them but not isolated in another class, I want to have them in the same class and make the other children understand that his friend only needs to learn how to communicate and that the main helpers are their mates. So that we don’t need to separate class, and we will be able to make their scholarship, and in a long way their life, much easier and better.

Here we have some apps which can help this kind of children, they help them to solve communication situations easily.
