Asperger Syndrome students - Elvira Astola Parejo

First of all I’m going to search for the perfect definition of ‘Asperger syndrome’ so we can understand everything better.

‘’Asperger syndrome is a way of describing the way in which a person understands other people, talks with other people, and acts with other people. A person who has Asperger syndrome may not fit in well with other people, and may be unable to act like everyone else in different social situations. Neurotypical (or NT) is a term that was coined in the autistic community as a label for those other people who are not on the autism spectrum. Asperger syndrome is thought to manifest as a developmental disorder, and is not considered a mental illness. Most adults with Asperger syndrome can learn how to make friends, do useful work, and live successful lives. Asperger syndrome is considered to be at the highest functioning end of the Autism spectrum disorders. All genders can have Asperger syndrome, although it is more common in males.

Asperger syndrome is not a disease. People who have it will have to deal with it for the rest of their lives. However, they can try many solutions to help them and learn how to be able to reduce the impact in their life. One solution can be medication to restrict the different symptoms like aggressivity. The big problem with people affected by Asperger's is that they cannot understand emotions or how people think. Therapists attempt to help the person with that. They will do many activities like acting an emotion and let the Asperger people guess what it is.’’
After knowing that, let’s make a simulation of a situation where I, as a future teacher, had a pupil with Asperger in my class.
First of all I would like him or her to feel comfortable with the classroom in general (including her or his classmates, the facilities and the environment) even trough in some moments it could be a little bit difficult.
As we can see in the video, they feel how some people laugh at them and make them feel useless, so, I think it is so important to teach everyone to respect the others, including the ones who are a ‘’a little bit different’’. Also, it is so important to awareness the teachers to help them; because, as we can see in the video ‘’Planeta Asperger Trailer / largometraje documental’’ the first guy tells how his classmate (Moisés) and also his teacher always made him feel so bad, uncomfortable and stupid.

I don’t want this kind of things to happen in my class that is why I am going to work using cooperative learning, dividing my pupils in groups where they can help each other and learn about them.

As a personal commitment I would like my pupil to see my not only as a teacher but a friend in the sense that they see me as a big support for them. I would awareness my pupil about the fact that being different it is okay and also, make them know that nothing happens if you do things more slowly, the important thing is to achieve and get the results.

Because, as we can see in the same video that I mentioned before, people with Asperger syndrome have dreams, objectives and goals as all of us because we are all the same. The two guys who appear at the end, were older and know how to deal with the problems they have and they would love to relate with people as quickly as we do and their goals are to work or to finish their studies and to form a family with babies and so on.

So, in conclusion, I would say that I would like all my pupils to feel comfortable in my class and for that I am going to help them so much and apply some useful techniques to teach them how to work with different people.
